I would have to say that my biggest problem with public speaking is uncertainty about my Ideas. I have in the past waited till the last possible minute to put my speeches together. That of course means that I do not rehearse my speech many times. Even though I feel that I have a good grasp on the subjects I speak on I always wonder if my conclusion about the subject I am presenting will be reached by others.
At least a few times a week with my job I have to give an small presentation to groups from five people to 100 people and I have found that some of the techniques the book mentions help me relax and not get flustered. The one I use the most often is just breathing. Even though I have given the presentation 500 times I still get a little nervous especially when the group is 50 or more people. Once I take a few deep breaths and calm myself down the presentation just roles out the way I want it to.
The biggest thing that I will try to take away from this chapter is planing and preparing the speech early. It is going to be my biggest challenge but I think I will be able to accomplish it.
I agree with you, when it comes to Public Speaking being unprepared is your worst enemy. I've been in the same situation where I think I understand the subject well enough to give a speech without much preparation, but I was definitely WRONG. You end up forgetting to mention key points and your ideas are all scattered because you are trying to remember everything but it's just not there.I've also tried the relaxation exercises and they have in fact helped me handle my anxiety. I think what I found more useful from the book is to not think that people are there to criticize me, if the are there is because they want to hear what I have to say. Maybe you can use the same concept when you have to talk in front of large groups of people.
ReplyDeleteI can completely agree with you on this one. I have always been super nervous when it comes to giving speeches. Looking back at it though, I probably would not have been as nervous if I had practiced my speeches more. Being prepared for any speech, big or small, can make all the difference in the world. When you are prepared for a speech, you are going to feel more comfortable and confident, while you are carrying it out. Preparation will only assist your speech and make it better. Just remember to breath, stay calm and it will be over before you know it.
